Application: The utility provider at the Kumbh Mela 2013 wanted to ensure uninterrupted flow of water for the gathering of people during the mela. Another issue was high downtime caused by motor burn out as a result of voltage fluctuations. The use of Servo Voltage The UP Jal Nigam was preparing for KumbhMela 2013. Billed as the largest gathering in the world, with over 100 million participants, the Mela involves the set up of a separate township - Kumbh City - spread over 2000 hectares. The utility provider wanted to ensure uninterrupeted flow of water and also reduce potential downtime that could be caused by motor burn out due to voltage fluctuation

The Problem: High down time occurred due to the burn out of pump motors. The culprit, fluctuating voltage, is a common occurrence in UP. If a motor burnt out, it required up to six hours to remove it from the bore well and replace it with a new one. Voltage fluctuations also led to frequent DG set usage in order to operate the bore-well motor

Result: According to the UP Jal Nigam reports, not a single incident of pump motor burn out occurred during the 55 day duration of the Kumbh Mela. The installation of the stabilizers reduced the usage of DG sets and saved close to Rs 60 lakhs in diesel fuel cost. Satisfied with the result, the UP Jal Nigam is now in the process of issuing a Government notification that all Jal Nigam bore-wells in UP should necessarily be connected to a Servo Voltage Stabilizer.
